Abstract
Thomas · Hardy was a critical realistic writer in Britain. He was considered as one of the most prominent and talented English novelists in the 19th Century. When he wrote Tess of D’Urbervilles, he became fully aware that the main human tragedy resulted from society. This article is to explain the cause of Tess’ tragic fate. In the second half of 19th Century, with the development of capitalism, more and more social injustices occurred. Social environment﹑man-dominated thought、moral standards、 social conventions were the most important reasons which carried Tess to the abyss of misfortune.
