Zhengzhou University, located in Henan province in central China, cradle of Chinese Culture, is one of the 100 key comprehensive universities selected for the national "211 Project" in which the Chinese Government is energetically focusing financial assistance and encouragement for academic development and expansion during the 21st Century. Since Zhengzhou University of Technology and Henan Medical University and were integrated with Zhengzhou University in the Project, it has continuously expanded.
Zhengzhou University occupies an area of 430 hectares (1075 acres) in this provincial capital city. The total value of its fixed assets is 685 million RMB, of which the value of teaching instruments and equipment amounts to nearly 180 million RMB. The main libraries contain about 3.26 million volumes. The University has its own publishing complex, and also produces a variety of 14 academic journals. It is one of the first universities on line with the China Education and Research Network.
Multiple academic fields of study, among them, science, engineering, medicine, liberal arts, history, philosophy, law, economics and management are offered in undergraduate and post-graduate programs. Within these disciplines, 67 major academic areas of study are available for undergraduates, 88 Master's degree programs, 4 Master's degree specialities, 9 Doctoral degree programs, as well as 5 post-doctoral research stations. Also on campus is the "National Educational Base for Cultural Quality College Students".
The University now has 35 thousand undergraduate students; 1870 post-graduates, and more than 200 foreign students. It has a well-educated faculty and staff among the 2,200 teachers, four of whom are academicians with either the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Among them are 268 professors, 793 associate professors; 68 of these tutor doctoral students and more than 500 of them tutor Master's degree students. Doctoral degrees are held by 272 teachers, and Master's degrees by 1,167 teachers.
The University possesses two national level scientific research centers and five fields of learning for key production granted by the national "211 Project"; along with 33 provincial level key programs and eight provincial level key laboratories. Thus, these provide a strong foundation for basic and applied scientific research, forming excellent potential for scientific and technological development.
The University has outstanding advantages in research of mutation breeding with ionbeams, refractory materials, rubber and plastic moulds, and the treatment of cancer of the esophagus. Scientific research in these ranks either first inside China or holds an advanced level in the international field. Research in many other areas has gained recognition both in China and internationally for the unique features, such as, Vietnamese history, ancient Chinese literature, ancient Chinese history, material physics, laser technology, organic chemistry, basic mathematics, chemical technology, chemical process machinery, material processing engineering, molecular medicine, ophthalmology, combined organ transplants, Since the Eighth Five-Year Plan, the integrated Zhengzhou University has won 25 prizes of "National Advance of Sciences and Technology" and "National Invention", thus making outstanding contributions to the economic construction of both the Nation and of Henan Province, as well as to the development of society.
Academic exchanges are flourishing throughout the University system, which enhance and challenge the academic atmosphere. The University has been strengthening international academic exchanges and cultural cooperation with foreign countries, and has successfully established friendly and cooperative relations with numerous institutes of higher learning in the United States, Japan, Canada, Great Britain, R.O. Korea, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Finland, Russia and Ukraine.
